Before we ask the question, you have to choose a random number from a list which contains 5 randomly generated 5-digit numbers. Please be aware that we will not know which number you selected. If you agree, the numbers are saved for your convenience and you can have the numbers presented on the following webpages where we ask the Randomized Response Questions. If you don’t agree, the numbers are deleted. In this case, be sure to copy-paste the number to a place where you will find it again (e.g. notes app, a word processor) or to write it down.

For the survey, it is important that you stick to the random number which you have selected. Some respondents change from one number to another to avoid embarrassing answers. This nevertheless does not increase your level of anonymity beyond what is reached by using the RRT. Nevertheless, doing this will spoil your answer.

On the following pages, you will receive an instruction concerning the random number as well as several questions.

Example: You will receive the following instructions regarding how to answer the question:

If the last digit of the random number is
* a 1 or 2, please answer to the question on the right hand side
* if it is a 3, 4 or 5, please answer to the question on the left hand side
* if it is a another digit, please answer the question in the middle.

Let's assume that the sixth digit of the serial number is a "1" and therefore you answer to the question on the right hand side with "yes". We, the compilers of the data, will not know whether you in fact have used performance-enhancing illegal substances or prescription drugs, or whether the digit was a 1 or a 2. We will however, with the help of mathematical processes, be able to calculate with a degree of certainty approximately how many people have or have not used substances to enhance their performance (over all the "yes"-answers, which are given).

Let us now assume that the digit of the serial number is a "6". In thís case you have to answer to the question in the middle (the embarrassing question). If your answer is "yes", because of the fact that you have ever used illegal substances, it is impossible for us to know, if your answer comes from this fact or because your digit is a "1" or a "2". (we don't know the serial number of your EURO-Banknote or your choosen random number)

By using this process, you may honestly answer without concern, since we cannot conclude that you personally have in fact used performance-enhancing illicit drugs. Even unauthorized espionage into your data in the Internet will be inconclusive in respect to your actual behavior. The data about the particular kind of sport, the faculty and the year of birth make a positive identification of individuals impossible.
